The Smart-cities opportunity
With increasing urbanization, smart-cities and urban mechanics initiatives are likely to be a key driver for IoT. But it’s not all about sensor data and workflows for optimizing operations and saving costs. Its equally about citizen engagement, crowd and commute management, cross promotion of local businesses, enhanced security and new revenue models for the local government, by leveraging “software defined things” and the power of cloud, analytics and cognitive computing.
The ability to take data from devices, internal systems of the municipal IT organization (whether they be CRM, EAM, ERP, GDW etc wrapped in a unifying api management layer) and third party data sources to generate insights and trigger actions to deliver monetizable SLAs is key to the success of such initiatives.
