The previous articles in this series discussed the challenges of transforming an organization, how to choose tools, and the basic agile features of  IBM Collaborative Lifecycle Management (CLM).  This article discusses how CLM supports scaling lean and agile, and specifically support for the Scaled Agile Framework®(SAFe).

What is SAFe?

Lean and agile practices have their roots in small teams.   “Scaling” is when we apply similar principles on large efforts, involving multiple teams and organizations.  The leading methodology for scaling agile (according to the latest State of Agile™ Report) is SAFe.  Case studies show that adopting SAFe can dramatically improve:

  • job satisfaction,
  • time-to-market,
  • productivity,
  • and quality

Our own experience at Persistent Systems Ltd. bears this out, as we develop our CE/CLM tools using SAFe.

RTC dashboards provide up-to-the-minute views of progress, including both tabular and graphical SAFe-specific views of data.

Rational DOORS Next Generation (RDNG)

Rational DOORS Next Generation (RDNG) provides templates for these SAFe concepts:

  • Strategic Themes
  • Solution Context
  • Lean Business Case
  • Solution Intent

Rational DOORS Next Generation (RDNG) excels at the structured documentation, reviews, approvals, history, and tracing.  This includes traceability to design, implementation, and test elements when needed for business critical, safety-critical, or regulatory requirements.  RDNG also supports managing different variants of systems with shared and non-shared requirements.

Rational Quality Manager (RQM)

SAFe solutions are delivered via a Continuous Delivery Pipeline.  Rational Quality Manager provides test planning, test construction, and test artifact management as an integral part of that pipeline, with full traceability to the other tools.

Why CLM?

The differentiating value of CLM is that it provides a complete integrated solution, with open integrations to non-CLM tools. CLM is also customizable to support how your organization works.   This will be covered in the next article in this series.

Summary

The CLM tools were developed specifically to support agile and lean teams at scale. SAFe is fully supported out-of-the-box.
