Cargo transportation in India takes the digital road with SmartShift by Mahindra, Persistent, Google Maps and Google Cloud

MediaAgility was acquired by Persistent in May 2022 and its capabilities form the foundation for Persistent’s Google Business Unit. As a Google Cloud Partner and a strategic IT Transformation services provider, the Google Business Unit is focused on delivering transformational services with cloud-native solutions that enable businesses to stay relevant and benefit from the public cloud platform capabilities.

SmartShift by Mahindra is a load exchange platform that was built by MediaAgility, now acquired by Persistent, from scratch. Other cloud providers were considered, but we chose GCP because it offered scalable platform to deliver the app in a short development time (4-5 months). We chose to build SmartShift using Google Maps APIs and Google App Engine, a powerful platform to build web and mobile apps. To support the storage needs associated with the app, we selected Cloud Datastore, a highly scalable NoSQL database, and Google Cloud Storage, an object storage service. Transactional data is stored in Cloud Datastore while compliance-related data, such as identification documents provided by drivers, is kept in Cloud Storage. To gain real-time insights from the user data associated with the app, we stream data from Cloud Datastore and Cloud Storage into BigQuery, a fully

About a year ago, our partner MediaAgility and our technology team were deciding upon the technology platform we needed. With hundreds of transactions happening every day, we wanted something that could support us with rapid scalability, at the same time we did not want to spend too much on dev-ops. Robustness and reliability is something we really love about Google!, and most importantly, we wanted someone who could partner us in our vision of solving efficiency and productivity problems with data and analytics
