Accelerating the Path from Information to Investment Insight

Listen to this client success story

In private equity, the quality of an investment decision depends on how thoroughly a team can evaluate the opportunity behind it. Yet before that evaluation can begin, analysts must first turn a dense Confidential Information Memorandum (CIM) into a coherent view of the business.

For a leading investment firm, the initial CIM review guided the rest of the investment process. It provided the foundation for assessing the opportunity, testing the investment thesis and identifying areas that warranted deeper diligence. But finding, validating and organizing this information into a standardized investment summary took three to five days.

This essentially meant that time that could have been spent assessing business performance, examining growth assumptions and identifying risks was instead devoted to locating, validating and organizing data.

When Manual Review Became a Bottleneck

As deal volume grew, the process became increasingly difficult to sustain as CIMs varied widely in structure, terminology and the presentation of historical performance and future projections. Information that appeared prominently in one document was buried in another. Similar metrics could be labeled differently or distributed across multiple sections before they could be properly understood.

The challenge was not simply finding information but extracting insight from complex, inconsistent documents so it could support rigorous investment evaluation.

The objective was not to automate investment decisions, but give investment professionals faster access to a reliable, consistent view of each opportunity so that more time could be devoted to analysis, scrutiny and judgment. Any solution would need to work across highly variable CIMs, generate consistent summaries, preserve analyst oversight and fit naturally within the firm’s established investment process.

Building Intelligence into the Review Process

Persistent used its DocIntel accelerator to develop a solution that extracts, organizes and summarizes information from CIMs. By combining document intelligence, OCR and prompt-engineering techniques, Persistent identified and organized the required information across different layouts and reporting structures.

Key financial, operational, market and transaction information were assembled into a structured draft for analyst review.

This improved speed and consistency without disrupting established investment workflows.

Analyst oversight remained central. Every summary was reviewed and validated before being used in subsequent evaluations, ensuring that automation accelerated information preparation without taking responsibility for interpretation or investment judgment away from the team.

What Changed After Implementation

Once the solution was implemented, the impact became evident in both the speed of CIM preparation and the way analysts used the resulting information.

Work that had previously taken three to five days could now be completed in minutes for data extraction and initial summary generation. The solution automatically identified and organized more than 50 key financial, operational, market and transaction data elements.

As a result, the firm achieved:

  • More than 90% reduction in review effort
  • Extraction and initial summary generation reduced from days to minutes
  • Automated extraction and organization of more than 50 critical data elements
  • Consistent investment summaries across opportunities
  • A scalable review process capable of supporting increasing deal volumes without proportional increases in preparation effort

These results changed how analytical capacity was used across the evaluation process.

Discussions could move more quickly to questions around business quality, growth potential, market position, customer concentration, operational strengths and investment risks. The standardized format made it easier to compare opportunities through a common lens while still allowing each business to be evaluated on its own merits.

As deal volumes increased, the firm could prepare more opportunities for evaluation without requiring a corresponding increase in review effort. The result was greater leverage from existing analytical expertise and a more scalable evaluation process.

Establishing a Secure Foundation

Because CIMs contain sensitive financial and transaction information, security and governance were critical requirements from the outset.

Persistent deployed the solution within the firm’s Azure environment with role-based access controls and governance mechanisms appropriate for investment workflows. The DocIntel accelerator also accelerated implementation by allowing the project to focus on the firm’s evaluation requirements rather than building foundational document-intelligence capabilities from scratch.

The result was a solution tailored to the way investment teams already worked, with a foundation that can support additional document-intensive workflows over time.

Bringing Investment Judgment Forward

The most significant outcome was not that CIMs could be summarized in minutes. It was that investment professionals could spend more of their time evaluating opportunities.

Instead of assembling information, analysts could focus on business performance, growth assumptions, investment risks and diligence priorities. The structured summaries improved consistency across reviews and helped teams compare opportunities more effectively.

By reducing the effort required to prepare investment summaries, the firm created more capacity for analysis, scrutiny and judgment. It enabled investment professionals to apply their expertise earlier in the process and spend more time developing an informed view of each opportunity.

In private equity, access to information is rarely the differentiator. The differentiator is how effectively firms transform information into conviction. By shortening the distance between information and insight, the firm created a faster and more rigorous approach to investment evaluation.
